19th Festival of Philippine Arts & Culture

Filipino food trucks will be in one place for the first time!

The Festival of Philippine Arts & Culture will be at Point Fermin Park in San Pedro on September 11 & 12, 2010 from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. for $7.00 and children under 5 are free.

Get ready to fall in line for one of the three Filipino food trucks that will be in one place for the very first time. The Manila Machine patriotic truck was the first Filipino food truck. It is best known for their chicken adobo (chicken with garlic, soy sauce, and vinegar), varieties of sliders made with Pan de Sal (similar but tastier than a dinner roll), and moist ube cupcake (purple yam flavored cupcake, and topped with a coconut buttercream).

Tapa Boy has a charmingly painted jeepney (means of public transportation in the Philippines) on its truck. Their motto is “Filipino Food on Filipino Time”. Being on Filipino time usually means running late, and the line is more than likely the reason for the long wait. They have numerous varieties of food bowls. Their tapa (thinly sliced marinated beef) comes with garlic fried rice, chopped onions and tomatoes on the side topped with a fried egg in a nice reusable bowl. There are three types of turons (fried eggroll desserts). Old style turon has banana with a sliver of jackfruit rolled in brown sugar and fried. New school turon has banana with nutella. Flan B turon is an egg roll with leche flan (Filipino flan) within it. The turon is such a tease, since it comes in a somewhat smaller size than the traditional turons.

Last but definitely not least is the white Filipino fusion food truck, White Rabbit. One of the co-creators is James Du who is a Le Cordon Bleu graduate that once worked for Gordon Ramsay. It is somewhat like Filipino food with a Mexican twist. There are Filipino dishes that could be in tacos or burritos. Their pork sisig (sautéed, fried somewhat crispy pork with onions and garlic) has a jalapeno twist to it. The pork tocino (sweetened cured pork that is braised and grilled) is slightly spicy. They also have chicken adobo and beefsteak (citrus marinated with a soft texture), but most people order their sisig.

There will also be numerous booths like most festivals, but they will have a Generations Stage and a Main Stage that will have the GMA Pinoy TV Variety Show highlighted by a popular Filipino comedian Rex Navarette. The FilAmArts.org FPAC frequently asked questions (http://filamarts.org/fpac/faq) gives great ideas like bringing your own foldable chair.
